Ok, so here we are in the midst of January, and I have heard the term "the third month of January" more than once over the last week or so. It's cold, it's been dark before 5pm for bloody ages, and the bank account might be looking fairly thin having been paid a little early back in December.
The term "Blue Monday" is a recent term used by a travel company (so it's been rumoured) back in 2005 in order to drum up bookings for the year ahead. It's interesting to me that what was initially a marketing scheme has become such a widely used term, but for very different reasons.
Somehow, now we have a trigger to remind us on the third Monday in January that if we have fallen behind on our new years resolutions, haven't properly planned finances and haven't organised a holiday that somehow we are all sitting around being "blue". I know one thing for certain, I wasn't feeling blue until I opened my news feed and the internet told me it was Blue Monday!
The power of words have a huge influence over what we think, and what we think has huge influence over how we feel. This is something that is well known by psychologists, mental health practitioners, and doctors in the neurological field. What we read and see, especially first thing in the morning has the power to shape and influence how we feel for the rest of the day. So for me this morning, being reminded that it was Blue Monday, felt like a terrible way to start my day.
Time to reframe and restart, pour myself a good coffee, get my to do list done, and get cracking on the things that I have set out for the week. Get some air. Catch up with a friend you haven't seen in a while. Do something that sparks joy for you!
Blue Monday? Not today!
