How to feel better if you haven’t kept your New Year’s resolution!

I can't count how many new years resolutions I tried, only to fail mere weeks into them. Some were massive changes that I wanted, while others were small things I wanted to change. I had great intentions, but something just always distracted me from really going for it!

What I was really missing was the knowledge of goal setting, building structure and having the discipline to really stick to it. But I hadn't really much experience of success in doing this. While some may be used to setting and hitting goals in a workplace or in the field of sport- it’s NOT something that everyone is comfortable doing. And initially, I certainly wasn't. But with a little practice I feel like I can do anything. But where did I START?

I started small. Goal setting should always start SMALL. Simple. And ACHIEVABLE. If you want to run a 5k for example, don't immediately go out and expect to run a 5k if you haven't done it before. Run for 30 seconds. Then the next day try 60 seconds. Build slowly and consistently and you will notice yourself getting more capable each day. If you try 5k on day 1, how long in are you likely to give up?

Try teeny (micro) goals. Wait until you have started to achieve small wins. Notice how good they feel. CELEBRATE them. And then start to build them gradually. Make a plan, write it down and hold yourself accountable.

What happens when you don’t fulfil your January goals? Honestly, unless you’re running for president it’s unlikely to be the end of the world.

So, give yourself a break. If the goals you have set are too big, break them down. Revisit them often. Adjust them if you need to. Do what you need to keep on track. You only fail if you give up completely.

You can do it!
